This mini-symposium — the eighth in our annual series — explores the artistic connections created through trade along coastal maritime routes and between far reaching shores. Intrepid voyagers have long used water as a highway to access new land and resources. These explorations have initiated encounters between diverse communities and have encouraged the dissemination of regional imagery, materials, and techniques. On February 9, 2017, we gathered four leading museum professionals to discuss cross-cultural influences and stylistic innovations that have resulted from migrations, explorations, and trade in Oceania and the Americas.
